In todays world, us women are often burdened by the expectations of society. The expectation to be perfect, beautiful and
Wednesday 4th November
My brief is Fashion magazine aimed at 14-18 year olds.
My target audience is women of all backgrounds, who live mainly in more rural areas, as I plan to feature fashion expressing the beauty of nature and clothing suitable for the outdoors.
Based on my research on the main codes and conventions, I will use a masthead at the top middle of the front page, in big letters, as the masthead is important in making the magazine recognisable. I also plan to use a colour pallet of darker autumn colours, such as dark green and dark reds and oranges and grey. This is to give the magazine a slightly gothic atmosphere, whilst retaining the autumn nature scene. For the layout of the magazine, I plan to have the taglines and other information along the sides of the main image with the masthead at the top, so the image stands out. The main image is important because it is the first thing that readers will see when looking at fashion magazines, so to ensure that the magazine stands out and conveys the message of inner and natural beauty, I will need to use an image that will show this. I will us props that convey autumn such as scarves and autumn leaves. The taglines are important as they speak the message of the magazine, so I will use them to show readers that
I plan to use anti-stereotypes to appeal to women, such as having a model with no makeup on and a ‘natural look’. This will appeal to women as it shows that you don’t need to be conform to a stereotype to be beautiful.
I plan to use intertextuality, I will write about empowering women and address modern day sexism and the patriarchy. I will discuss inner beauty.

Mock Exam DIRT
Q1) OFCOM - regulator
Q2) Tinie Tempah, Jess Glynne: Not Letting Go - Paloma Faith: Picking Up The Pieces
Media language:
- Different Narrative
- Different Mise-en-scene
- Different Camera work
- Different Editing
- Different Soundtrack
Different: Explain and give an example
Music videos use camerawork to differ from each other to reveal different moods and atmospheres in the music videos. They may choose to use a naturalistic camera work to show the reality of a situation compared to using highly stylised camerawork to show a professional style.
In the music videos I have studied a clear difference is seen in the use of media language through...camerawork/mise-en-scene/narrative/soundtrack. The explain and describe the difference in your videos.
Q3) Radio producers target different audience through the content of their radio programming, local
radio stations are only available on FM in the local areas although some can be accessed through an
online presence. Local radio target a specific audience through their coverage of local events, weather
and advertising local business. Radio producers target particular audiences through their use of style and genre of a radio programme. This can be seen in Radio 1 Live Lounge which uses an acoustic style to attract their audience along with a young presenter to attract a younger audience. This can be seen in the Harry Styles performance where he appeared and performed a current hit to attract a younger audience then he covered an older track by Fleetwood Mac which would appeal to an older wider audience especially in the acoustic style.
- How do they target different audiences - methods
- Why do they target different audiences - To make money via advertisers, public service
- Live Lounge example
Q4)
- Media language
- Representation
- Talk about an aspect that creates representation - image, text, colour, setting.
- What representation is created?
- What does this suggest to the audience?
On the cover of MOJO magazine we can see that the use of images is of a young musician in the middle of the magazine and an older musician in the upper right corner. This image creates the representation of both old and young people. This makes the audience think that rock is a genre for both old and young people, making both audiences want to read the magazine.
Q5)
- Similar elements of media language
- Different elements of media language
- Use examples for each
- State whether they are similar or different because of genre conventions or music type.
- Do they reflect magazine conventions or music conventions? Use examples to support.

Mock DIRT - Lego Movie
Section B: Promoting Media

Games Rating Authority or Video Standard Council - Age rates video games in UK
Q7) Likely to be about media industries and theoretical framework
2 reasons why they would release both film and video game.
Give reason and then explain it
- Strengthen the brand
- Extends fans enjoyment
- Increases profit overall for the conglomerate
- Diversify the product to increase possibility of success
- Extends brand awareness
- Less dependent on one media form being successful
Q8)
- Know the theory well (knowledge)
- Explain the theory (knowledge)
- Apply the theory to the film (understanding)
- Give specific examples from the film
Uses and Gratification Theory:
- Entertainment - watch something for pleasure and to escape the real world
- Personal Identity - identify with characters in the film, chosen to identify with a role model
- Surveillance - watch and follow media to gain understanding of the world
- Social Interactions/personal relations - keep in touch via video game communities, or discuss the film with peers
Blumer and Katz stated that media products were there for the audience's entertainment, they were for pleasure and to escape the real world. This can be applied to the Lego Movie, as it provides a different world to escape to with many interesting
We can see this specifically in the setting of the lego movie, as it is set in a bright colourful world made of lego, much like a world from a child's imagination to which the audience would want to escape.
Blumer and Katz also stated that media products were there for the audience's personal identity, so they could identify with characters from the film and choose a role model to identify with. This can be applied to the Lego Movie, as it provides characters that all audiences can identify with, such as Emmet and Batman.
We can see this specifically in the character of Wild Style, with whom young girls could identify as she is seen as clever and better at everything that the main character, Emmet, does. She is also seen by young girls as 'stylish' and 'cool' as she has dyed hair and wears lipstick.
