1. the system of terms belonging to or peculiar to a science, art or specialised subject
2. the science of terms, as in particular sciences or arts


Camerawork:

  • establishing shots - shot in filmmaking or television that sets up the context for the scene ahead, designed to inform the audience where the action will be taking place
  • low angle  - a shot from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eye line, looking up, this makes the subject look strong
  • high angle - a cinematic technique where the camera looks down on the subject from a high angle, this can make the subject seem weak or powerless
  • canted angle - an angle deliberately slanted to one side to portray unease, disorientation, frantic or desperate action, intoxication and madness 
  • aerial shots - a shot taken from an elevated vantage point
  • elaborate camera movement such as tracks - any shot where the camera follows backward, forward or moves alongside the subject being recorded
  • steadicam - a mount for cameras that mechanically isolates the operator's movement, allowing for a smooth shot
  • crane shots - a shot taken by a camera from a moving crane or jib
  • hand-held camera - a shot taken by a camera that is held by someone without a mount of any kind. This often results in a shaky image, making it seem more home-made
  • point-of-view shots - a shot that shows what the character in a film is looking at
  • shallow focus - used to emphasise one part of the image over another, focuses one plane of the image is in focus while the rest is out of focus
  • focus pulls - when you change focus during a shot, focusing from one thing to another

  • shot/reverse shot
  • juxtaposition
  • non-continuity editing
  • crosscutting
  • fast-paced editing
  • less common transitions: dissolve, wipe, fade
  • post-production effects

Soundtrack:

  • music
  • diegetic/ non-diegetic sound
  • sound effects
  • sound bridge
  • voiceover

Mise en scéne:

  • lighting (especially low-key lighting)
  • location/set
  • costume and makeup
  • props
  • casting and performance style
  • blocking (the composition of elements within the shot)
