The study of music videos covers the influence of social/cultural contexts and two areas of the theoretical framework - media language and representation - plus the following two specific topics from media audiences.

  • the ways in which audiences may interpret the same media products very differently and how these differences may reflect both social and individual differences 
  • the ways in which people's media practices are connected to their identity, including their sense of an actual and desired self

Media Language in music videos

The set music videos are a mixture of styles:

Wheatus - narrative and performance and 
Avril Lavigne - Performance and some narrative


Media languages in the set videos:

  • camera work
  • editing
  • mise-en-scene
  • soundtrack
  • narrative
  • how the media language portrays aspects of reality, presents a point of view and represents the world to create messages and values
  • generic conventions of music videos
  • uses of intertextuality in music videos
