LO: To revise what mise-en-scene is , and see how it is used effectively in music videos.

  • Understand what the 7 elements of mise-en-scene are.

  • Analyse connotations of the mise-en-scene in regards to representation.


Mise-en-scene:
Everything we see on the screen




Connotations:

  • They are in a school (lockers, school uniform, etc.)
  • Pop genre
  • Targeted to young males and females

High Key lighting:

  • Limits shadows (no harsh shadows)
  • Shapes the face of the subjects
  • Very forgiving (makes people look good)
  • Done by one bright light
  • Its goal is to show as much detail on the subject as possible
  • Lights up the whole face 
  • Quick and easy to set up
  • Usually suggests a lighthearted show or film
  • Low lighting ratio, 2:1
Low Key lighting:
  • Opposite to High Key
  • High contrast, dark tones very dark, light tones very light
  • Mysterious, dramatic and intense moods and emotions
  • Often used in action or drama-based series
  • Higher lighting ratio, 8:1
  • Used in intense or dramatic scenes
