MOJO Exam Case Study

MOJO has use media language differently to represent and attract the target audience by using a masculine colour pallet of red, gold, black and white. This use of colour connotes a serious tone, and is suited to the rock genre that the magazine is from. The serious tone also attracts the target audience of people very serious about music. The colours gold and red might represent and attract the richer members of the audience, as the connotations for these colours are that of wealth and the upper class.

The main image is of the band Fleetwood Mac in black and white as they are today whilst their reflection is of them in their earlier days. The use of the reflection of the band from when they where younger in the main image could be used to attract the older generation, many of whom were listening to the band back then, and would feel nostalgic to see them as they were when they listened to them. It could also be used to say that even people of the older generation can be famous. The use of the colours white and grey in the masthead connotes the greying hair of old readers. This is used to attract the main target audience of people aged 35-70 years old.

The minor image of a gold CD attracts those who prefer vinyl or CDs over streaming. This would be the majority of the target audience, and primarily the older males. Its gold colour connotes wealth, and as the magazine is expensive, wealthy people are its target audience.

The low angle shot connotes that they are more important than the reader, and they are portrayed as almost god-like to confirm their elevated status as celebrities. This and the unsmiling expressions on the band members faces, makes the magazine seem as if it is committed to music and is important. This attracts people who are rich and serious about music.

MOJO uses media language such as the colour pallet, main image and minor images, the lexis, layout and masthead to attract and represent their main target audience.
